What is Quezon City?
ABOUT THE CITY
Quezon City has been at the heart of Philippine cinema for 105 years, shaping the country’s film industry from its golden era to today.
During the cinematic golden era in 1950s and 1960s, the city was home to two of the nation’s “big four” studios, Sampaguita Pictures and LVN Pictures, which produced nearly 300 films annually and pioneered cinematic techniques that defined Filipino storytelling. It became the thriving ground for National Artists for Film like Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, and Ricky Lee who used film as a platform for social commentary, particularly during the Martial Law era of the 1970s and 1980s. Since then, this diverse community has become the wealthiest city in the Philippines, boasting a net asset of USD 7.32 billion in 2023.
QC as the Entertainment Capital of the Philippines
Today, Quezon City remains a center for culture, entertainment, and media, with a thriving ecosystem of production companies, post-production facilities, cinemas, and film archives. It is home to leading networks ABS-CBN and GMA, the country’s highest concentration of film workers and guilds, and premier film education institutions like the University of the Philippines Film Institute. In its 12th year, the QCinema International Film Festival continues to nurture both emerging talent and global cinematic voices.
From its pioneering studios to its modern creative ecosystem, Quezon City remains the beating heart of Philippine cinema.
