On the Designation of Quezon City as a UNESCO Creative City of Film

Today marks a defining moment in Quezon City’s history. On this year’s World Cities Day, UNESCO has officially declared Quezon City as a Creative City of Film—one of the first in Southeast Asia to receive this recognition.

This achievement is the culmination of years of collaboration, vision, and belief in the power of storytelling to shape our collective identity. I extend my deepest gratitude to Mayor Joy Belmonte, whose unwavering vision and trust empowered us to embark on this journey—from the moment we first dreamed of it, to this incredible realization today. Her leadership has shown that creativity is not an afterthought of governance, but its very soul.

At the heart of this recognition are our film workers—the writers, directors, producers, crew members, and storytellers—who are the true heartbeat of Quezon City. They are the reason we exist as a Commission and why this designation matters. Their labor, artistry, and resilience built the foundation of this vibrant creative ecosystem.

As we celebrate this milestone, we remain grounded in our purpose: to ensure that the benefits of this honor reach the very people who make cinema possible. Our programs will focus on strengthening skills, protecting creative rights, and nurturing an inclusive film community that reflects the diversity and dynamism of Quezon City.

This is not just a recognition of what we have achieved—it is a call to deepen our commitment to creative governance and cultural sustainability. We are ready to take on this responsibility, to open our doors to collaboration, and to continue building a city where stories thrive and creativity empowers every citizen.

Today, we celebrate Quezon City—not just as the film capital of the Philippines, but as a city that dares to imagine and create a more humane, inspired, and inclusive future through film.
